Our History

In 1870, the Ministry of Communications inaugurated a telegraph service connecting Tokyo City and Yokohama City. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of Japan’s journey towards modern communication.

On July 31, 1952, the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation Act was passed, leading to the establishment of the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation (affectionately known as “Dendenkosha”) on August 1, 1952. This state-owned special corporation was the precursor to NTT and played a crucial role in the widespread adoption of telephone services across Japan.

During the nation’s period of rapid economic growth, Japan’s telephone and communication services saw extensive expansion. In 1985, the privatization of the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation marked a significant shift. To optimize its operations and broaden its business horizons, NTT restructured itself, creating subsidiaries for each business line, thereby laying the foundation for the NTT of today.

Research & Development

Research & Development (R&D) lies at the heart of The NTT Group, serving as a pivotal force in propelling both the business and the community forward. Our primary mission is to foster groundbreaking technologies that enhance well-being and pave the way for a brighter future.

The NTT Group has amassed a portfolio of approximately 18,000 patents, a testament to its innovative edge. In the face of global market shifts and the escalating pace of technological competition, NTT has adeptly integrated its own technologies with those of other companies. This strategic synergy not only propels efficient technology dissemination but also fuels our business expansion.

It’s rare for a telecommunications company to maintain its own research and development division, yet NTT stands out in this regard. This distinct advantage is one of the many reasons why NTT is a leader in its field.
